Features of the Rittal AdvancedTCA Cabinet Air Conditioning Solution
One of the significant challenges faced by the AdvancedTCA system is the thermal management of the Rittal air conditioning system. The ATCA specification defines a maximum power dissipation of 200W per slot. This means that a fully populated ATCA chassis with 14 slots would have a total power dissipation of up to 2.8kW, and the heat dissipation in a Rittal cabinet with three fully populated systems can reach up to 10kW. Furthermore, in the near future, clock frequencies are expected to reach high double-digit GHz levels, resulting in thermal dissipation that cannot be adequately handled with current air cooling methods. To address this effectively, it is necessary to understand the situation and requirements.

Rittal Cabinet Rack Cooling
In most application scenarios, cooling is achieved through air circulation. Rittal air conditioning provides both inlet and outlet cooling options. Inlet cooling involves the intake of cooled air into the system through axial fans or diagonal fans. Outlet cooling, on the other hand, uses fans to extract the hot air from the system. Due to the limited installation space and high integration density of ATCA cards, there is a significant pressure loss caused by the cooling airflow.
Commonly used axial fans or outlet axial fans in PLC control cabinets are not suitable for this application, as they suffer significant power losses under high pressure. In contrast, radial fans are specifically designed for this purpose, although they may have slightly lower airflow rates.
